The Man Behind the Name
Bobby Barrera was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up watching his father, Roy Barrera Sr., walk into courtrooms across this city—and understanding, from an early age, that the law was not just a profession in the Barrera family. It was a calling.
Bobby followed that calling to St. Mary's University School of Law, graduating in 1983 from the same institution that shaped his father before him. He began his legal career as an Assistant Criminal District Attorney in Bexar County, then served as a Special Prosecutor — learning the system from the inside, understanding how cases are built, and deciding that his life's work would be standing on the other side of that table.
Bobby Barrera Law
By 1986, Bobby entered private practice, and in 1988 he was admitted to the U.S. Federal Courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit — expanding his reach to some of the most complex and high-stakes cases in the federal system. Over the course of more than four decades, he has tried hundreds of jury trials spanning DWI, assault, domestic violence, drug offenses, homicide, white collar crime, and federal charges.
Beyond the courtroom, Bobby has given back to the legal community in ways that reflect the same values his father modeled. He has served as Past President of both the San Antonio Bar Association and the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association, as a Director with the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and as Chair of the Criminal District Courts Committee for Bexar County. He is a frequent lecturer and course director on trial techniques, DWI defense, cross-examination, and sexual assault defense — investing in the next generation of attorneys the same way his father invested in him. In 2021, the San Antonio Young Lawyers Association recognized that commitment with its Mentor of the Year Award.
